Efren Penaflorida pioneered the pushcart classroom (kariton classroom) in Cavite City together with his friends to give the unfortunate kids in their area the right to education and in the process lessen the chances of them being involve in gangs, of whom I wrote an article previously. And now, as I succumbed to write another one, it is with pride that I share with everyone that a fellow Pinoy, a simple and not-so-popular one like Manny Pacquiao, had risen to the top - Efren Penaflorida is CNN's Hero of the Year 2009. Among the 10 nominees, seven of which are Americans, he had emerged victorious, of course, through the help of his friends and supporters , mostly Filipinos (and that includes me) as shown by the number of votes cast under his name.
To read the whole story and watch some video clips, kindly go to CNN Living.

Cheers to Efren and his co-volunteers and those other unnamed heroes in existence!
