Life is full of surprises, especially when you have an eccentric sister *grins*. My sister-in-law had prepared a Halloween party for the kids and kids-at-heart which will take place tonight and she just gave out the invitation yesterday, I was shocked! Where in the world will I get a costume that will fit my son (he's on the chubby side) in just a short span of time. The last time he attended a costume party was ages ago when he was just one or two, it was a Halloween party in McDonald's and he bagged the best costume award, together with five other participants, the years after that were spent in oblivion (at least partying-wise). In picture: My son as he donned a bumblebee costume.

Anyhow, after I received the invitation, I instantly searched the net for adorable and inexpensive kiddie costumes and (as I am so lucky these days *grins*) I found a website which can cater to all my Halloween needs, and I'm not talking about costumes alone, they also have props, decorations and other supplies. And their list of costumes is huge, I saw Medieval, Egyptian, pirates, cartoon characters, mascots, movie stars costumes, among others, I even saw Prison con Halloween costumes which immediately caught my eye (it oozes of sexiness), I want one for myself, I think a matching one for hubby will be nice *wink*.

This one (refer to the photo) I like very much, I wonder if they have a size for my baby. Hubby commented (he's behind me at the moment) that a devil costume will also fit me, personality-wise *lol*. I hope my bebe find it to his liking, I bet he'll look so cute wearing such a costume.

What do you think, isn't it adorable?

Wouldn't you know it, today is my lucky day *happiness*! I was clear of all duties kitchen related because of some events and celebrations around me *grins*. I just found out this morning that the youngest child of a not-so-close cousin will have his baptism today, we were not invited as it was just a small event (according to them) and just the same, I don't expect them to invite us, some wounds take a long, long time to heal *sigh*. They did, however, sent us some food, I think there was a chicken pastel, pork menudo, relyenong bangus, chopseuy and some lumpiang ubod, we had those for lunch and we still have some left for dinner *lol*. What did I gift in return? I had two pairs of shirt and shorts wrapped and sent their way, just to make the boat even *grins*.

And just this hour, my little bro came by with spaghetti, kinilaw na tokwa't baboy and beef caldereta in hand, he attended a co-teacher's birthday and she forced him to bring some food home, aren't we lucky? Now, we have other viands to feast on for dinner and I just had some spaghetti for merienda (kaso di masyadong masarap, ssshh, secret lang natin yun) *lol*.

Sana bukas ganito ulit para di na ko mag-prepare ng baon papuntang cemetery
*wishing silently*.

P.S.
Hubby just got home with a bucket of Chickenjoy and a tub of Nestle 3-in1 + 1. This really is my lucky day *jumps and waves happily*.

Have you seen the music video of Senator Noynoy Aquino? If you still haven't, here's your chance *grins*...

Have you decided on who to vote as the next Philippine president on 2010? If you haven't it is okay, I haven't given it much thought either, not yet anyway, we still have time to ponder and pray for guidance.

What do you think of the video? Love it or hate it?

The Hunt is On

Hubby's at the airport right now, he's going to fetch his father who will arrived from U.A.E. My father-in-law decided to take an early retirement, five years early I think, he's just 55. It was a decision well-embraced by his children, as my hubby said, they (he and his siblings) are all grown-up and (he wants to believe) are capable of taking care of themselves, and by retiring early he can, at least, experience the life that he had forgone in order to earn a living in the Middle East, and I think it's time he have a taste of the fruits of his own labor *grins*.

One of his foremost goal when he come home is to find a suitable car for him and the family, as far as I know he has his eye pointed at a pick-up truck or a big van, though there are a number of new and used car dealers here in the metro, I think finding one that he likes will take some time as they need to go from place to place to inquire and compare prices. Hubby and I had been talking about that ever since his pop mentioned it, he wanted to gather as much information as he can on different types of vehicles, the advantages and disadvantages of one from the other, the services and/or freebies given by car dealers and of course, the prices and mode of payments. And as I am always online, he asked me a favor, actually, he kinda ordered me *grins* to look around the net for used cars (he thinks that buying brand new will put a big dent on his father's savings), and because I love my hubby (plus other ulterior motives), I obliged. I found this website which boast of having a massive database of used cars and when I browsed around, scanning and examining cars that passed my fancy, I couldn't help but agree, they, actually, do have a huge collection of used cars for sale which run the gamut from private individuals to used and independent dealership. Aside from that, they don't only cater to a used car buyer but, also, to those who are looking for a new one or for those who are in the hunt for contract hire and car leasing, as well as for those who wants to sell their vehicles. It's like a one-stop-shopping store, pretty nifty eh?

The problem is, I think, their services are only available to UK residents, I am trying to find out at the moment if they have a Philippine counterpart. I hope they do *fingers crossed*!

I'm not supposed to blog today as I feel exhausted, though I didn't do anything strenuous at all, I just did my usual 6 to finish drill but I really, really feel tired, I even sans Cafe World on my activity list *grins*. What prompted me to write this post is the news that the Little Einstein videos that proliferated our parenting era is just a scam. I may not live in the US but I was one of those mommies who spent money buying those Little Einstein videos, audios and books for my son when he was just a baby, I accumulated a number of books, cd's, vcd's and dvd's along the way, not just of Little Einstein but of others as well, I'm talking about Barney, Elmo and the rest of the Sesame Street gang, Dora, Thomas and Friends, Bob the Builder, Backyardigans and so on and so forth, does that mean they are all scams?

The New York Times reported Thursday that Disney is offering a refund to buyers of its ubiquitous “Baby Einstein” videos, which did not, as promised, turn babies into wunderkinds. Apparently, all those puppets, bright colors, and songs were what we had feared all along—a mind-numbing way to occupy infants.

This news has rocked the parenting world, which had embraced the videos as a miraculous child-rearing staple. Videos that make your kid smarter while you prepare dinner? Genius!

Or not. According to the article, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children under two years old stay away from watching screens. In the letter threatening Disney with a class-action lawsuit for "deceptive advertising," public health lawyers hired by Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood cited a study which found a link between early television exposure and later problems with attention span.
I don't think this is the kind of news that parents around the globe will take lightly, I know I wouldn't.

I would like to believe that I did good with my son but what if I did not *in deep thought* *sigh*?

In case you're still not in the know, there will be two long weekends this coming November, the first one will be on Nov. 1 and 2 for the celebration of All Saint's and All Soul's Day, consecutively; while the second one will happen on the last weekend of the month - Nov. 27 and 28 for the observance of Eid'l Adha and on the 30th for the celebration of Bonifacio Day.

MANILA, Philippines—There will be two long weekends next month.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has declared Nov. 1 and Nov. 2 special non-working holidays in observance of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, respectively. Nov. 1 falls on a Sunday and Nov. 2 on a Monday.

The last weekend of the month will be longer.

In Proclamation No. 1808 issued in April, Ms Arroyo declared Nov. 27 and 28, which fall on a Friday and a Saturday, special non-working holidays in observance of Eid’l Adha.

Eid’l Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, is observed after the hajj, the annual pilgrimage by Muslims to Mecca.

The following Monday, Nov. 30, is Bonifacio Day, a regular non-working holiday.

An aunt who's long been living in the US, in Arizona to be exact, called my mom last night, it is not unusual for her to call as she regularly do that, she asked us for our personal gift request this coming Christmas, yes, tita doesn't forget to send a box full of goodies for us and our other relatives every year, actually, a number of times in a year. I told her that I want a full-paid trip to Grand Canyon as a Christmas gift but she told me to get a job and fly there using my own money *sigh*.

Oh, she called to ask my mom if granny's favorite flower can thrive in Arizona, she said that the temperature there at the moment is at 80 degrees, I say that's hot! I have been living in the Philippines my entire life and I still feel irritated and giddy during summer when the heat is at its peak, yes it is super hot and humid here during summer but I don't think we ever reached 80 degrees, it's no way near that. But my aunt and her family loves Arizona, so there must be something to love about the heat, someday I'll find that out, when tita finally say yes to my plea *grins*. Anyway, she was asking about the flowers - gerberas , as she is currently having her front lawn fix, she even asked my mom to look for a suitable landscape design in Scottsdale AZ, she's kinda having trouble deciding as she find all the designs presented to her fit and perfect. Oh well, that's my tita!

Happy weekend everyone!

Okay, I confess, I spend more than half of my time everyday in front of the computer, and yes, I just sum and calculated it. I could reason that it is part of the job, or, worst, an occupational hazard, as we have a computer/internet shop but as much as I would love to think that I have no hand in this matter, I know otherwise.

I spend fourteen hours or more online (or not), doing various stuff, a number of that hours are use tweaking and updating my blogs and doing some online opportunities (Mylot, Microworkers) and then the rest are spend hanging out in Facebook, not to connect with friends and relatives but to play, I know you know what I mean, Facebook has loads of fun applications and some of you might be as into playing those as I am *wriggling index finger*.

Fad is defined as a fashion, custom, style, hobby or anything in between that many people are interested in for a short period of time; fad is something that will pass. Is Facebook-ing a fad? Or, are we that hooked to be considered under FAD - Facebook Addiction Disorder?

I think, a little self-observation is necessary, what say you?

Friday, October 23, 2009

I hang out in Facebook a lot, you can even say that most of my online time is spent or wasted doing nothing but playing games in that social networking site. I seldom click on the link or videos present in my wall, nothing personal, I'm just not a clicker *grins* but when I do, it means that I saw something really important or something funny or something irritable or something blog-worthy, and guess what, I did found something that fits the last two category that I have mentioned, imagine that two in one.

You can read the blog post in Jenni Epperson's multiply site, as the original blog (photo above) was blocked or deleted.

I browsed around GMANews.TV, hoping that they already picked up the news/rumor, and they did, you can even read the statement/answer/denial of DSWD Secretary Esperanza Cabral on that said article.

According to her, it is impossible for relief goods to be rotting inside the warehouse as they do not store perishable items. She said the warehouse -- a complex of five buildings -- only has rice, clothes, non-food items and canned goods.

"Walang nabubulok. Stocks 'yun na hindi perishable (Nothing is rotting. Those stocks are non-perishable), " she said.
It is, either, she's totally dumb or pretending to be dumb. Hello!

I was supposed to blog about this, when I saw it on TV the other day but as our dsl (internet provider) connection won't permit it, I am just doing it now and most of you folks might already know what I am talking about.

Angel Locsin together with her showbiz friends created a shopping website, actually, it is more of an online auction site, wherein the proceeds will go straight to the Philippine National Red Cross to fund the ongoing relief and rehabilitation projects for the victims of typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana) and Pepeng (Parma) around Luzon.

So, if you have a few hundred dollars to spare and you love designer bags, shoes, etc., which could be more valuable as it is pre-owned by local celebrities, do visit shopandshare.ph, and in the process you are helping millions of Filipinos who are staggering to build their lives after the storm (literally).

The auction list, at the moment, has Louis Vuitton, Prada, and Burberry bags, as well as Louis Vuitton and Tory Burch shoes from actress Angel Locsin, Anne Curtis, Kris Aquino, Ruffa Gutierrez, among others.

I was never really an Angel Locsin fan, and as I seldom watch TV, I didn't even know that she's an ambassador of Red Cross, but in all honesty, I admire her for doing this.

I wish I can shop and share, I love that pink Hermes bag from Angel *sigh*.

And here's another news on business... remember what I wrote two posts back about the need to write a business plan if you're really keen on making it as an entrepreneur, well, as I continue my search and research on how to go about expanding our internet cafe, I stumbled upon another topic that I think is worth knowing, it is about Return on Investment or what is commonly pertained to as ROI. As I am so incline to learn the ups and downs, and left and right of business though mine is just a small cafe, the article explaining what really is ROI got me interested and it doesn't hurt that the writer uses a computer as an example, coincidence or divine intervention *grins*?

I've heard and seen the term ROI more than a few times already, specially during those days when I was all about getting a franchise, I never really took time to ascertain the facts back then and, obviously, I didn't plunged on franchising, either; yes, I chickened out *lol*.

ROI is an acronym for Return on Investment but there is more to it than that, business people tend to base their decisions on acquiring new assets by studying its ROI. In buying a computer for example, ROI isn't calculated base on its purchasing cost alone but on the possible cost of repairs, its production and its lifespan. If a big company wants to buy a new set of a single computer and its cost is 1000 bucks, the production that it will input needs to equal that amount to justify the need to buy it, that's one point of consideration in ROI. Other points involve are the cost of repairs and its recurring productivity, when the warranty of that said computer ended, its ROI is now base on the two points I've mentioned, when the cost of repairs and the lack of productivity begins, the computer will then become a liability instead of an asset, and that is negative ROI, a big no-no in business.

The article is written to explain how ROI works in big companies but when you dwell in the matter, it doesn't really matter if your business is big or small as the input and idea it conveys works just as well. Actually, it got me thinking, I need to check how the cafe is doing and how each PC is performing as we are nearing our third month and some of the parts/hardware of those computers only have three months in warranty. I, also, think that saving a fraction of our income each month for future repairs is a good idea, I need to talk to hubby later about that.

I think, I am another step closer to my goal *smiles*...

I wasn't able to blog for almost two weeks as I was busy dealing with my new addiction (I'll let you in on that one of these days) but more than that, I don't wanna blog about tragedies and disasters anymore, it was sad and heart-wrenching to watch and learn about it on TV, much more to write about it. As we all know, after the wrath of Ondoy, itwas Pepeng's turn to raise havoc and turmoil in our already suffering country, and as of present tabulations, it has already taken more lives than Ondoy totaling to 419 (as of Oct.16), I don't know the specific cost of damage it has brought to infrastructure, business and agriculture but after seeing the flood in Pangasinan, Ilocos, Zambales, Pampanga and the landslides in Baguio, Benguet and Cagayan Valley, I am sure that it will peak at millions in minimum. Imagine months, years or even lifetimes of saving and building a future were all destroyed and wiped out in a matter of hours and days.

"Tragedies tends to bring out the best in people," an infamous line frequently heard in tragedy/drama movies, but this time it is but applicable to our nation and to our people. I believe that helping out doesn't have to be inspired by tragedies and disasters but if it works that way, so be it.

I know and I am sure that we have a number of unnamed heroes in the wake of these calamities, people who gave a fraction or whole of their income and savings just to help their countrymen, people who lend a hand and gave some of their precious time in packing and distributing relief goods to the affected areas, people who are brave enough to solicit money and goods from their officemates, classmates, churchmates, etc. to donate to the affected people, people who doesn't have anything to give but intensely listen to the news and silently pray for strength of heart and body to those who are suffering and those people who save others without thinking of their own safety and those who have loss their lives in an effort to help out. We might not know you in names but we know that you exists and we are so proud and thankful that you are our fellow Filipinos.

Millions of Filipinos may have not been here when disasters struck our country, some are working abroad and others are migrants, but it is not their physical presence that is important because they had shown that they are here with us in spirit and in heart.

Apl.d.Ap visited the Philippines when he heard of what happened and put up a benefit concert with other local artists last Thursday, October 15 to raise money for the victims of the typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng. Aside from that, he also brought with him canned goods from California, donated cash and appealed for more money from around the world for the victims of the typhoons. Lea Salonga spearheaded two events and, also, used her singing prowess to accumulate funds for the victims of the recent calamities, she was said to raised $19,000. Along with her, other Filipino workers and immigrants in the US also did their own drives to raised money and send it home to their fellow Filipinos, Filipino communities in the consular jurisdiction of the Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C. alone had raised $100,000, of which more than half was already turned over to Philippine relief agencies and preferred NGOs. Filipinos in Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, Georgia, New York and other parts of the US, as well as those in Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, France, Germany, Singapore, Hongkong (and those other countries that I can't remember at the moment) also did their fair share of giving and donating and you can read more about those at GMANews.TV.

Video below is the appeal made by Lea Salonga that is posted in YouTube and in her official website -

“The Filipino spirit remains strong and unbowed; together with our kababayan and friends here and around the world, the challenges we now face will be overcome," Willy Gaa, Philippine Ambassador to the US.

And I couldn't say it any better. Mabuhay ang Pilipinas at mga anak nito, mabuhay ang Pilipino!

I have mentioned a few posts ago that we opened up a small business, a minute internet cafe to be exact, I think I also talked about the positive response that we got from the gamers and other internet/computer enthusiasts in our area, we're nearing our third month and as early as now, we are thinking about expansion - adding a few more computer units and adding other services like printing and accepting typing jobs. Though we feel the need to expand, putting it together and making it happen is a different matter as we have a lot to think about.

I was searching around the net about internet cafe business and its future, the pros and cons of expanding a business at an early stage and other related reads when I chanced upon an article about writing a business plan and its benefits. My husband and I are not business-degree holders, I took up Mass Communications and he's into IT, so, we didn't really put our business plans and dealings into writing, we just think, talk and go about it, fortunately for us, it works that way but the article that I have read made me think, maybe writing a business plan is a good or the only way to go, for that matter, specially now that we're thinking about enlarging our business.

The article that I am talking about is entitled Benefits of Writing a Business Plan, written by a certain Jason L., what drawn me to it was the line - Almost without exception, each business owner with a plan is pleased she has one, and each owner without a plan wishes he had written one. In a new entrepreneur's point of view, that line alone says it all, it made me finish the whole article in a jiffy, taking and weighing in all that I read. It was written in detail and in simple terms, allowing its readers, me in this case, to read and learn exactly at the same time without the burden of looking for meaning and explanations. It was clear and direct to the point, giving me no chance to turn my back and not to finish the article, it was, actually, a pleasant read.

I have no idea how to write a business plan but I intend to do one, it doesn't have to be formal and all, right? If I could get the immediate benefits written in that article by scribing a plan, I would certainly do it no matter what, and then from there we'll see whether we will expand or not.

Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Finally, a good news.

After weeks of watching, hearing and living the bad news, there are a few things that we Filipinos can smile about, if the Pinoy spirit of bayanihan and our never-faltering sense of humor haven't do the trick yet.

Number 1 - Two Filipino telenovelas and actress, Angel Locsin are nominated in the 37th International Emmys. GMA 7's Magdusa Ka which starred Dennis Trillio and Katrina Halili and ABS-CBN's Kahit Isang Saglit (A Time For Us) with Jericho Rosales and Malaysian actress, Carmen Soo as the lead, are both nominated for Best Telenovela along with other country's bet like Brazil's India - A Love Story and France's Second Chance. Angel Locsin, on the other hand is nominated alongside Emma de Caunes of France, Cecilia Suarez of Mexico and Julie Walters (Molly Weasly in the HP series) of UK in the Best Actress category for her performance in ABS-CBN's ex-primetime series Lobo. The winners will be announced on November 23, 2009 at a Black-Tie Ceremony hosted by UK television star Graham Norton at the Hilton New York Hotel. You can visit the Philippine Entertainment Portal for more details.

Number 2 - The Echo, an American remake of the Filipino movie Sigaw, will be shown nationwide here in the Philippines this October. The movie first created a buzz when it was announced that Yam Laranas' film Sigaw will follow the line of Asian horror films being remade in the US, just like The Ring and The Grudge, a few years ago. Along with the storyline, Yam Laranas and Iza Calzado were picked to direct and star in the said remake, it was shot in New York City [US], Toronto, and Ontario [Canada]. More details at IMDb and if you're interested, you can a watch a preview of the film at You Tube.

Number 3 -Another Filipino actor had break in in the Hollywood arena through the movie Surviving Evil, though it is not a big-budgeted, major US flick, we are still proud of the feat that Joel Torre had done. And as an additional bonus, the movie revolves around the fabled human hybrid in Philippine folklore known as Aswang, it was not shot here in the Philippines though the story said it is, the film was actually shot in South Africa, probably because it is co-produced by an African production outfit. IMDb has a detailed report from the director to the cast, and even the synopsis of the film, you can also find a trailer clip in You Tube.

By the way, I would like to acknowledge Crisen for the heads up.

Number 4 and the best of them all - Filipino, Efren Penaflorida, is included in the elite list of nominees of CNN Heroes, as far as I know there are six categories - Championing Children, Community Crusader, Defending the Planet, Medical Marvel, Protecting the Powerless, and Young Wonder, Efren or Ka Ef, as he is fondly called by his students is under the Championing Children category. Click to know more about CNN Heroes and the people that are included in the list, you can also read a detailed story about Efren, his group and their mission, and as you're there already, you might as well vote for him, I just did.

What's Next?

I can't help but wonder what's next, what else does Mother Nature has in store for us *sigh*?

For almost two weeks now, the news, be it in television, radio, newspaper or, even, in the internet, is about disasters, it has been a series of calamities, coming in one after the other. First, it was Bagyong Ondoy (Tropical Storm Ketsana), it landed and destroyed Metro Manila and its neighboring provinces, killing almost three hundred in its wake and destroying trillions-worth of properties. A few days after that, the news of the tsunami that had happened in Pacific Island and American Samoa were plastered on every televesion channels, as well as, in the internet, which killed more than a hundred and left thousands of people homeless and injured. At that same day, a high-intensity earthquake surprised Indonesia, killing more more than a thousand and leaving hundreds more injured and trapped in the rumbles. A day after that, another tsunami and another earthquake hit both Samoa and Indonesia, respectively, dealing more damage and incurring more losses. Four days ago, another typhoon (Parma) hit my homeland, this time it landed on the northern part of the Philippines, destroying crops, homes and other properties, as well as, killing a number of people. And then yesterday, I heard the news that more than 200 people were killed in India due to the five-day non-stop rain, causing flood and landslide in the country.

I fear that it's not yet finish, I fear that Mother Nature has finally had enough and it's taking its wrath against us. I fear for what's coming...

But I pray and I believe that God will always be with us.

Maya Angelou is in Los Angeles this week as she is being honored at the Braveheart Awards but instead of walking in the red carpet and regaling the stage, she was rushed to an L.A. hospital on Saturday, October 3. Up to now, we are still not privy to the details of her hospitalization, TMZ.com, the first to report the bad news, posted that the story is still developing, meaning they don't have any facts and concrete informations, either.

Associated Content - Dr. Maya Angelou was born in 1928, and has become a poet, best-selling author, actress, and above everything else a civil rights activist in her lifetime. She isn't known just as an influential woman, but one of the most heralded voices of the last few generations. Angelou worked with Dr. Martin Luther King and served as the Northern Coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. In a tragic coincidence, King was assassinated on her birthday. Soon after that, she worked with novelist friend James Baldwin to write what would later become known as I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.

It is beyond remarkable how much that Maya Angelou has been able to accomplish already in her lifetime, and the accolades just don't seem to stop. Everything she has been awarded with she has earned, and she is even deserving of more than she has received. Among some of the most notable awards she has received over the years is a Pulitzer Prize nomination for a Georgia, Georgia that she wrote the screenplay and composed the score for back in 1972. She acted in Roots and Poetic Justice, and has narrated more films and documentaries than can be mentioned. Angelou also has a Presidential Medal of the Arts, a Lincoln Medal, and three Grammy Awards to her name.
It is sad to know that such a great woman may be having trouble with her health, I'm praying for the best.
