The hardest and saddest articles that I would and have ever written in this blog's short life was the news that Cory Aquino had passed away and would be the subsequent stories about her life, journey and death.

I was born in the late 70's and was a normal, carefree child when the People Power (EDSA Revolution) took place. I knew that the Marcos dynasty was trampled but what does an eight-year old child really knew back then, I knew that the first woman president was elected but I don't think I really understand, I heard and seen in TV, radio and newspapers photos after photos of heroism, bravery, unity and love of country but what does a child care, how can a child grasp the whole idea of what had transpired.

By the time that I am old enough to understand, the glory that was People Power, and it's shining aura had already diminished. Yes, it is written in books and discussed in schools and History classes; and yes, it was still a topic of conversation and a thread in memory lane during the yearly anniversary celebrations, but at that time, more than its regal memory, the color was more of media and political hypes. And for a teenager who was just seeing the world in her own two eyes, the EDSA Revolution was just a part of the Philippine history and that was it, it was irrelevant to keep on going back to that time when the country was besieged with more problems - I was seeing the present back then, I didn't stop and marvel on those elite moments when the world admired more than just the beauty of our country but the beauty and strength of its people. Ignorant as it may sound, I even thought that maybe, the former President Marcos could have handled the problems better, that martial law may not be that bad...

I was born a rebel, my mom told me every so often that way back to my toddler years when kids just weep and plead for forgiveness when their parents scold or spank them, I would argue and go on a singular debate to prove, or twist the truth a little, that I did no wrong. I would even go as far as saying a litany of instances and enumerate names of aunts and uncles and scare my mother off with a number of threats, not that it work *grins*. I grew up loving discussions and mind battles with my parents and uncles, when I went to school, the urge of forcing my beliefs and principles on others intensify, I would always be a part of a debate, be it petty or big, and the need to justify everything that I knew and believe in was afire. I had been an editorial writer and head of the school paper during my elementary years, love of writing and the power to stand for something valuable was instilled in my young mind because of that. I was a worthy competitor in every debate that I had joined in my secondary schooling, love of country and a certain restlessness in spirit were the products of those debate-full years. My college years marked my rise to a simple bystander and a silent observer to a working Filipino - I was a member of the League of Filipino Students (LFS) and together with my friends and comrades, we hinder every tuition fee increase and every other moves by our college administration that we thought was not necessary. I had the time of my life attending secret meetings, rallies and strikes, I learned of the tyranny and oppression that the Marcoses and their cronies had inflicted on thousands of our countrymen, I learned of the dark truth but at that time the magic of EDSA and the People Power already dwindled to its lowest, and I was too preoccupied about my future to even dwell about its merits anymore.

Fast forward to August 1, 2009, the day of Cory Aquino's death was also the day that I finally had the time, courage and will to look back at Ninoy's death, the People Power and what I had gained because of those. Very late, indeed...

"Whatever else happens in her rule, Aquino has already given her country a bright, and inviolate, memory. More important, she has also resuscitated its sense of identity and pride." - Time Magazine 1987
